Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities Seeks
Input From Hall and Surrounding County Residents

ATLANTA, GA (October 7, 2011) – On Thursday, October 13, residents from Hall, Forsyth, Barrow, Lumpkin, White, Dawson and Jackson are welcome to share their ideas and get updates on policy and programs which affect people with developmental disabilities.  The Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities (www.GCDD.org) will facilitate a public forum from 5:30 to 7 pm at The Oaks at Lanier Charter Career Academy, 2719 Tumbling Creek Road in Gainesville.  Advocates, neighbors and community leaders are encouraged to attend to interact directly with state and local officials and to take this opportunity to make public comment.

One in five Georgians has a disability and greater than 50 million Americans have some type of disability as an occurrence of birth, injury or longevity.

“We welcome everyone to join us in Gainesville for this chance to interact with leaders in the disability community and share issues important to them personally, as well as to the north Georgia community,” GCDD Executive Director Eric E. Jacobson said.

The Public Forum is another opportunity for community feedback, much like the “Unlock the Doors To Real Communities Listening Tour” that is currently begin held across Georgia.  The Listening Tour also brings GCDD representatives into places like Bleckley, Lyons, Quitman, Ocilla, Macon, Athens, Rome and more to hear from community members.  Read blog reports and see the schedule of the Listening Tour dates here:  http://gcdd.org/news-a-media/in-the-news.html.

GCDD collaborates with citizens, public and private advocacy organizations and policymakers throughout the state to enhance the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities and their families. In conjunction with the Council’s quarterly meeting, it holds public forums twice a year to hear directly from local communities and gather information at the grassroots level.

Residents interested in presenting ideas at the October 13th public forum are welcome to sign up to speak when they arrive.
Jacobson and GCDD Chairperson Tom Seegmueller will facilitate the event.
